She kicks off her shoes, then opens her pocketbook and takes out a pack of Marlboros and an old, dingy lighter." Doris yearns to be the beautiful ingenue, but she can't seem to make it stick--like everything else, it's a persona she adorns to fit in with her peers. Behind the ever-changing mask she wears is a sarcastic, witty teenager wise beyond her years, and one brief interaction finally begins to reveal that girl behind the mask.

Jasper isn't exactly naive, but he hasn't yet reached the level of unabashed desolation affecting so many of the upperclassmen he comes across. He's unabashedly himself, whether that be good or bad, and longs to be included among his peers despite his non-compliance to their conformity. He's awkward, blunt, and just wants someone to hear him.
