She is not happy when she sees members from her congregation have found her estranged grandson, Douglas, getting him to come back to the small town of Holden to take care of her; Pastor Privett wants to express how she truly feels about Douglas but she holds herself back due to a terrible secret from her past that she has kept hidden for so many years, her belief that her love for him would trigger a family curse that may claim him as a victim.

Pastor Privett 10 to 15 years earlier, when she is raising her grandson Douglas. She wants to show him she loves him but cannot due to reasons she has not shared with any living person. This is a big emotional struggle for her because she loves him but she fears what may happen to him if she shows her love.
