Elio’s dearest friend. He has known Elio for years. He is in advertising, a job he hates. He is a cinephile, knows everything there is to know about movies. Around 4 years ago his mother died of skin cancer; he always felt guilty about his mothers death, he didn’t appreciate her enough and never got to say goodbye. Elio was there for him in ways no one else was. A silent presence, constant and loving. Soon after he met Maria. He likes to think his mother would have liked her. He doesn’t like to think very deeply about anything. He is present. A very simple man in that sense, with a seemingly pure understanding of happiness.

a well read man. He has dedicated his life to books. Reading mostly the poets of the beat generation and the Golden Age, with a few outliers of Russian literature. As a young man he found it difficult to interact with others. He was thinking about what others weren’t. At some point he forgot to live a life of his own; his only stories to tell being those already told by others. His relationship with his family is distant. His relationship with his friends is distant. And his relationship with women is purely superficial. He has lost all hope of ever finding love, so he enjoys the fleeting encounters he has. No one really knows what he does for a living, he just appears as quickly as he disappears.

a very private writer. She, in every sense, is an introvert. She writes for the books and culture section of The New Yorker. In her circles she meets many pretentious pedantic people. She’s friends with Maria, who is the only person she can have a genuine conversation with. When she was young she was fascinated with a duck living in her backyard; one day it flew away and she realized how alone she felt. She tries to go out, she wants to want to be with others. There’s a lack of spontaneity in her life. She’s looking for something, but she’s unsure what.
